Ginger Speaking About Tony Sinclair

Ginger & Tony

Ginger Speaks:
I never started out hosting shows. Where I really got my connection was Outrigger Club on 39th street. It's now a battered womens home or something. I went over & booked a show there, and at that time Tony (Sinclair) ran the shows. I worked with him twce and he was getting ready to open his own club. He liked what I did, & asked me if I would be interested in becoming a regular with him when he opened his own club. I said 'I'd love too'. That was about 1975, maybe early '76. During the disco era.
He opened a club at May Avenue & Wilshire Blvd. called Tony's. That didn't last very long, because he leased, & they decided to tear the building down, so he moved his club to North Western, & it was Tony's Club North. I was a regular with him for four years. That started my regular working schedule. I work there Friday, Saturday, & Sunday nights. At that time we did three shows a night. There were four of us that worked in the show, & maybe one guest.
I worked there as a regular, and then my father passed away in that time, & I took a little bit of time off. Then, when I came back, Tony said 'I want you to Host'. Well, I was very intimidated by the microphone, because I hardly even spoke in school- if I had to stand up and give a book report, I almost passed out. So, I said that I really didn't want to, and he said- 'No, you really need to expand your limits'.
So, when I came back I started. I'd have that microphone & be shaking everywhere. I would try to be as sweet as I could be. It just didn't go over. All they did is look at me, & all I could hear was voices- they weren't paying attention to me. I don't know what came over me, but I finally just said- 'Would you shut your fucking mouths!' And, I got thier attention. So, I thought, maybe this is the road I need to take, this sugar shit just isn't going to work. So, I did and it kindof went from there. I was the host at Tony's for probably three years.
I owe my stardom on the microphone to Tony, because he told me 'you will be able to do it, if you'll just do it'. I am where I am now because of him. So I would say he's a big part of where I am.
I saw Tony before I was legal to go out. I was 20 years old and most people won't remeber this- it was the Hotel Black & the After 5 Club in the basement. Tony did a show- and I thought he was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in my life. Tony was so gorgeous- I would follow wherever he was. He worked at the Stage Door Club, over on South Robinson and he stripped- he was a stripper. And I would go any time I could go- I was mezmorized by him. And, to this day a lot of what I've done with my career I've tried to pattern after what I've seen him do not to copy, because we're as opposite as we can be in looks & appearance. But, he has that class that I have always tried to get, and keep through the years.
