Ginger Speaks:
I ran into Scott Wilson. He talked to me about coming to work for him. That was about 1983.
Angles had opend a year before, and they didn't want drag of any kind in thier bar. They didn't like it, but that was a big time for drag. In the 80's drag was very big. Angles had to add it to make thier club successful.
They had a show on sunday night and hosting- I don't remeber her name, I wouldn't mention it if I did, because she was horrible. And when the show was anounced, everybody would get up and leave. So, I said 'I can make this work'.
At first they booked me in for a Tuesday night show, and Fritz Capone was thier Tuesday night host.
I said, 'I garuntee you within a month this place will be packed.'
By the second Sunday I was there, it was full.
I did not work with a cast then, I was the only regular on Sunday night. But it went over so well, they started moving some of thier Tuesday night entertainers in.
And we slowly built a cast for Sunday night & established a show. It was very successful.
And, wether it's quoted or not, I dare say, it has never been as successful since I have not been there. That's living proof, you can walk through the door today and see that.
Our first cast was very close unit & we were very good.
Now, I'm not saying that all the casts (at Angles) that followed were- because at a later date everybody got to be too grand. Everybody wanted to be the main focus.
I won't mention names- some of them are on your webpage (JOKDP - Jason's Oklahoma Drag Page)- but, anyway, at first we worked for the show, not our individual selfs. And all the shows were successful because of that.
One of our entertainers left, a couple passed away, and we replaced them- they new ones came in and they didn't want to work as a unit- they wanted to work only for themselves & it started breaking off. It was really good for about five or six years- I'd say untouchable. It really was.
